Dare to Be Unique: Create Your Own Look

Sometimes, it feels like every other person you see on the street is a copy. Bland, diluted, and tiresomely uncreative, there’s a crowd of fashion-lovers who somehow always play it safe, always chase a trend not because they like it, but because it’s popular. But the mark of a true fashionista is this: uniqueness. They are able to see a trend, deconstruct it, change it to suit their specific style, and then make it look better than it ever did on a runway model.

So, what about you? Have you fallen into a style rut that you want to get out of? Are you looking for a way to make all the little bits of your splendid personality show in your outfit? Well then, all you need is some inspiration and a few tips!

Find out what you like

Are you into florals and delicate lace? Do you lean towards feminine or masculine cuts? Do you love wearing leather jackets and skinny jeans? Figure out what your style is, or rather, what you want it to be: edgy, sweet, sophisticated, colorful, glamorous, a mix of these, or something else entirely. Try creating a Pinterest board and browsing the multitude of stylish outfits, then pinning your favorite ones. This way you’ll get a clearer picture of what you like, and you’ll also have a reference to look at when you go shopping.

Accessories to upgrade any outfit

Accessories can make even the plainest of outfits look amazing. A corset belt over a button-down shirt, a chain necklace to complement a cashmere sweater, a pair of over-the-knee boots to bring heated sexiness to a dress, a skirt, a pair of pants. A row of colorful bangles on your arm, some dangling earrings, maybe a leather belt, maybe a huge bag with a print – pick your statement accessories and have fun mixing and matching.

Be playful

If you want a really good example of how to be playful, take a look at Australian fashion. Take a look at any gal walking down the Bondi beach, and look at that laid-back, tousled, sexy style that screams “effortless”, and yet it looks totally alluring and simply fun. Sun-kissed and beautiful, Aussie gals know the “woke up like this” fashion even better than the French.

The visual interest of tattoos

Another thing about Aussie gals, perhaps because Australia is such a warm country, is that they know that their bodies paint a picture that’s just as important as the clothes they wear. Tattoos are very popular, and nothing says “unique” and “mysterious” like inked skin. We’re seeing a lot of Japanese tattoos in Sydney, a sign that the trends are turning retro, artsy, and entirely bold. If you’ve always wanted a tattoo, Japanese motifs like dragons, koi fish, or cherry blossoms are a great choice because a lot of them represent symbols of wisdom, strength, victory, and success. Whatever you pick, make sure you really pay attention to the design and consult the artist about all the details.

Find role models

Do you want to be like Grace Kelly, poised and feminine, a true princess of style? Or would you maybe prefer Marilyn Monroe’s glam, or Madonna and Lady Gaga’s raw, edgy fashion? Maybe you admire Iman’s ability to make any outfit work for her, or you’re like Lupita Nyong’o, pushing boundaries and bringing colorful outfits into the world. Whether you pick a famous celebrity or one of your close friends whose style admire, pay close attention to what they wear and how they carry themselves.

Inspect your old wardrobe

Honestly, you probably have a ton of pieces you never wear in there. Here are your options: start wearing them, donate them, or gift them to your friend. But don’t let them sit there in your closet, just taking up space. It’s time for a little revamp, and getting rid of old stuff is the first step.

Dare to try

Don’t be scared to try new things! Glitter and gold, bold colors and unusual cuts. So what if you get it wrong on the first try? Experiment, experiment, and experiment some more! That is how you get good at something, how you learn more about fashion, style, and what makes you unique.

One last thing: when you like an outfit on yourself, snap a pic of it! Take a selfie, and use it as a future reference. Besides that, simply have fun. Don’t let anything limit you, don’t think that you can’t pull something off. Try, get creative, and you’ll feel amazing when you realize just how many gorgeous outfits you can rock.

These are some great tips! I definitely agree, we should try and be unique and not just follow the crowd.

You know what, I’ve always been someone that refused to follow the trendy fashions of the season. I’m not sure if I didn’t like what I seen or if I was being a rebel lol. But this worked to my advantage because I was able to be unique in how I dressed and essentially that meant staying true to myself!! You have some amazing tips here to help everyone though the process a bit more, especially if they’re not usually creative. Great post!

You sure look confident in your choice of clothes and style. I usually favor the staple, standard styles and accessorize to create a look suitable for the occasion. No trendy clothes for me too. 🙂

  • Eliza Casipagan

I totally agree, you need to figure out what you want the style and comfortability so you can project confidently.

OMG! You look really awesome with your styles. I believe being unique is to believe in yourself.

  • Love this! When I started shopping at female clothing stores, I began to understand why so many gals look alike: they buy the same clothes. We need to be individuals and choose our own style, much of which is attained without cookie-cutter pieces from the mall. Good for you to promote this!
